Paying Lip Service to Sustainability

Paying Lip Service to SustainabilityPaying Lip Service to SustainabilityLets face it.Even though nothing came out of Copenhagen, awareness of easily avoidable phrases like climate change, green careers, even green jobs became hugely Googled, SEO-ed, categorized and tweeted. So, with this new found green knowledge, how will we as employees, consumers and maybe more importantly, as decision-makers, inculcate sustainability in the workplace and bring it to the attention of the executive suite? The Los Angeles Times on how eco-officers are moving into executive suites. Some companies, realizing the PR component that sustainability and all things green is beginning to carry, are appointing senior managers as sustainability/eco-friendly gurus. The article quotes a real estate, property management executive at CB Richard Ellis, who was promoted to the companys national director of sustainability. Hes quoted as saying, Im an outsider, a real estate guy trying to become an environmentalist. Wh at is saving him, for now, is his belief in environmental change- a belief, that without monetary advantage could quickly vanish.brde year, I attended a CSR Practitioner Certification workshop conducted by the Center for Sustainability Excellences (CSE) on CSR strategy and reporting. My co-students there represented several industries and surprisingly many of them held senior management positions at their respective companies. I say surprising because knowledge of CSR principles and reporting tools remains significantly uncommon in the U.S. and their titles spoke of an overestimated understanding of the field. Ironically, maybe the heavy title they carried was responsible for their attendance. What this certified though was the beginning of a trend that companies were beginning to recognize the need for a sustainability officer, albeit for reputational purposes, and were pulling their executives on the basis of their management experience alone. Of course, theoretically for most rol es, as long as you have management experience, the technical knowledge can be obtained. So why not with climate change and energy conservation?Late last year, I discussed this emerging trend, where I claimed that the diversity managers of the 1990s would inherit the formidable task of teaching, and leading, sustainability at their companies and that just like the executive suite pooh-poohed diversity two decades ago till it was threatening to land them in court, so will it be with the inculcation and reporting of CSR.Despite the emergence of these officers in the executive suite, the problem of ignorance remains. In a knee jerk reaction, we are instituting them as our green spokespersons but not demanding that they embed sustainability in the companys long term strategy and all operations. Until regulation and stakeholders support us, achieving corporate social responsibility remains an elusive goal, titles notwithstanding.

This is the exact age when youll be the most optimistic

This is the exact age when youll be the most optimisticThis is the exact age when youll be the most optimisticAnticipating the best possible outcome is something to strive for. But its not always easy. At what age does optimism come most naturally? Science thinks they have the trajectory figured out and in fact, narrowed down to a specific age.New research from the University of California Davis that welches published in Social Psychology and Personality Scienceused data gathered from a large sample of Mexican-Americans between the ages of 26 and 71 and followed them over a seven-year period. At four points over that period, the participants completed a six-question Life Orientation Test, a commonly used measure of optimism.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreIn addition, the group was also asked 54 questions about various life events, both positive and negative, that may have happ ened to them recently, such as moving to a bad neighborhood, getting into a good college, or making a new friend, according to Psychology Today.Using the information from these answers, researchers determined the direction of optimism throughout our lives. Were the most pessimistic in our twenties, they found, but our optimism ascends as we reach our thirties and continues on upward into our forties. Optimism peaks when were in our fifties, and slowly declines after that. The researchers pinpointed 55 as the age when people both men and women were at peak optimism. These findings were in sync with other research, which has also concluded that optimism rises as we get older and declines after mid-age. Life satisfaction and self-esteem is thought to climb with it just more to look forward to.Researchers also looked at a smaller sample of non-immigrants for the study and found that their optimism trajectory manifested differently than the above Mexican-American sample. For non-immigra nts, there was a distinct lack of optimism until their 40s, when it began to rise, and continued to do so well into their 70s. However, since non-immigrants represented only 14% of the total sample, researchers wrote, we refrain from further interpreting this finding until more evidence emerges. There was one booster that tended to inflate peoples optimism even more people who had luckier lives, full of positive events like graduating from college, receiving generous pay, and developing strong romantic relationships.More interestingly, however, was the discovery that people with more negative life events were not any more or less optimistic than other people. People with difficult lives remained equally optimistic as those who had been blessed with lifes rewards.Life is long, and nobody knows what could happen positive or negative. Five things that will make you much happier

Five things that will make you much happierFive things that will make you much happierTheres enough advice onhappinessfloating around out there to make your head spin. Yet, this is understandable, as everyone is different. What makes one person happy might make anotlageher miserable. In the face of so much contradictory, and often subjective, advice, what are you supposed to do if you want to live a happier life? Just forget about all that subjective advice and focus your energy and attention on science-proven facts.Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions. Dalai LamaUCLA neuroscience researcher Alex korbschlger has spent a great deal of time studying the effects of different happiness strategies on the brain. His findings have a lot to teach us about what actually works when it comes to boosting happiness.Korbs research demonstrates that your thoughts- and the emotions you feel in response to those thoughts- have a profound impact on surprising areas of your brain.Guilt and shame, for example, activate the brains reward center, which explains why we have such a strong tendency to heap guilt and shame upon ourselves. Likewise, worrying increases activity in the prefrontal cortex (the rational brain), which is why worrying can make you feel more in control than doing nothing at all.Gratitude creates happinessIm not advocating worry, guilt, and shame as the path to happiness. The illustration shows why we tend to succumb to thoughts that fuel these emotions. The real neural antidepressant is gratitude. Gratitude boosts levels of serotonin and dopamine- the brains happy chemicals and the same chemicals targeted by antidepressant medications. The striking thing about gratitude is that it can work even when things arent going well for you. Thats because you dont actually have to feel spontaneous gratitude in order to produce chemical changes in your brain you just have to force yourself to think about something in your life that you appr eciate. This train of thought activates your brain to make you feel happier.Labeling negative feelings dilutes their powerThere is an amazing amount of power in simply labeling your negative emotions. In one study, participants underwent fMRI scans of their brains while they labeled negative emotions. When they named these emotions, the brains prefrontal cortex took over and the amygdala (where emotions are generated) calmed down. This effect doesnt just work with your own emotions labeling the emotions of other people calms them down too, which is why FBI hostage negotiators frequently rely on this technique.Making decisions feels goodSimilar to naming emotions, making decisions engages the prefrontal cortex, which calms the amygdala and the rest of the limbic system. The key is to make a good enough decision. Trying to make the perfect decision causes stress. Weve always known that, but now theres scientific research that explains why. Making a good enough decision activates the d orsolateral prefrontal areas of the brain, calming emotions down and helping you feel more in control. Trying to make a perfect decision, on the other hand, ramps up ventromedial frontal activity- which basically means your emotions get overly involved in the decision-making process. It helps you to lend a handTaking the time to help your colleagues not only makes them happy but also makes you happy. Helping other people gives you a surge of oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, all of which create good feelings. In a Harvard study, employees who helped others were 10 times more likely to be focused at work and 40% more likely to get a promotion. The same study showed that people who consistently provided social support to others were the most likely to be happy during times of high stress. As long as you make certain that you arent overcommitting yourself, helping others is sure to have a positive influence on your happiness. Our brains are wired for spurHumans are social animals, to th e point that our brains react to social exclusion in the same way that they react to physical pain, with activity in the anterior cingulate and insula. Similarly, our brains are hardwired to interpret touch as social acceptance. Touch is one of the primary stimuli for releasing oxytocin, which calms the amygdala and, in turn, calms emotions. There are even studies that show that holding hands with a loved one actually reduces the brains response to pain. You might think thats bad news for people who are socially isolated, but studies show that a massage increases serotonin by as much as 30%. Touch reduces stress hormones, decreases the perception of pain, improves sleep, and reduces fatigue.Bringing it all togetherKorbs research highlights just how amazing the brain is, and he summarized his findings succinctly when he said, Everything is interconnected. Gratitude improves sleep. Sleep reduces pain. Reduced pain improves your mood. Improved mood reduces anxiety, which improves focus and planning. Focus and planning help with decision-making. Decision-making further reduces anxiety and improves enjoyment. Enjoyment gives you more to be grateful for, which keeps that loop of the upward spiral going. Enjoyment makes it more likely youll exercise and be social, which, in turn, makes you happier.Travis Bradberryis the co-author ofEmotional Intelligence 2.0and the cofounder ofTalentSmart. This column first appeared at LinkedIn.

10 Brilliant Tips for Dealing With a Difficult Boss -The Muse

10 Brilliant Tips for Dealing With a Difficult Boss -The Muse10 Brilliant Tips for Dealing With a Difficult BossIn an ideal world, we would all have fantastic managers- bosses who helped us succeed, who made us feel valued, and who were just all-around great people.Unfortunately, thats bedrngnis always the case. But, whetherbei the person you work for is a micromanager, has anger management problems, shows favortism toward one person, is a flat-out workplace bully, or just isnt very competent, you still have to make the best of the situation and get your job done.To help out, weve gathered the best advice from around the web for dealing with a schwimmbad boss. Try one or mora of these tips to find some common ground with your boss- or at least stay sane until you find a new gig.1. Make Sure Youre Dealing With a Bad BossBefore trying to fix your bad boss, make sure you really are dealing with one. Is there a reason for her behavior, or are you being too hard on him or her?Observe your boss for a few days and try to notice how many things she does well versus poorly. When she is doing something bad, try to imagine the most forgiving reason why it could have occurred. Is it truly her fault, or could it be something out of her control?Read More From Fast Company2. Identify Your Boss MotivationUnderstanding why your boss does or cares about certain things can give you insight into his or her management style....if the rules are totally out of control, try to figure out your boss motivation. Maybe its not that he really cares about how long your lunch break takes he actually cares about how it looks to other employees and their superiors.Read More From Brazen Careerist3. Dont Let it Affect Your WorkNo matter how bad your boss behavior, avoid letting it affect your work. You want to stay on good terms with other leaders in the company (and keep your job).Dont try to even the score by working slower, or taking excessive mental health days or longer lunches. It will only put you further behind in your workload and build a case for your boss to give you the old heave-ho before youre ready to go.Read More From Work Awesome4. Stay One Step AheadEspecially when youre dealing with a micromanager, head off your boss requests by anticipating them and getting things done before they come to you.a great start to halting micromanagement in its tracks is to anticipate the tasks that your manager expects and get them done well ahead of time. If you reply, I actually already left a draft of the schedule on your desk for your review, enough times, youll minimize the need for her reminders. Shell realize that you have your responsibilities on track- and that she doesnt need to watch your every move.Read More on Managing a Micromanager5. Set BoundariesWorking with someone who seems to have no boundaries means that you have to go ahead and set them. One of the challenges of unlikable people is that they come with equally unlikable behavior- and its important to lea rn how to distance yourself from that behavior. As Robert Frost said, Good fences make good neighbors.Read More on Working With Someone You Dont Like6. Stop Assuming They Know EverythingJust because someone has a managerial title doesnt mean that they have all the right answers, all the time. I realized then that, just because someone is in a position of authority, doesnt mean he or she knows everything. From that point forward, I stopped assuming the title manager was equivalent to all knowing..Read More on Finding the Good in a Bad Boss7. Act as the LeaderWhen dealing with an incompetent boss, sometimes its best to make some leadership decisions on your own.If you know your area well enough, there is no reason to not go ahead creating and pursuing a direction you know will achieve good results for your company. People who do this are naturally followed by their peers as an informal leader. Management, although maybe not your direct boss, will notice your initiative. Of course, you dont want to do something that undermines the boss, so keep him or her in the loop.Read More From Careerealism8. Identify TriggersIf your boss has anger management problems, identify what triggers her meltdowns and be extra militant about avoiding those. For example, if your editor flips when you misspell a sources name, be sure to double and triple-check your notes. And if your boss starts foaming at the mouth if you arrive a moment after 8 AM, plan to get there at 745- Every. Single. Day.Read More on Dealing With Toxic Bosses From The Muse9. Use Tips from Couples TherapyWhen dealing with disagreement, pull on some tenants from couples therapy to work through the issue.Simply repeat back to him what he said and ask Is that what you meant? (a standard trick ripped from couples therapy). If he agrees to your recap, ask him to tell you more about it. When you repeat someones perspective back to him, you give him a chance to expound and, crucially, to feel heard.Read More From Fast Com pany10. Avoid Future Bad BossesWhen interviewing with a new company, do your research ahead of time to make sure youre not getting into another situation with a less-than-ideal manager.Have coffee or lunch with one or more staffers at the new company. Ostensibly, your purpose is to learn general information about the company and its culture. However, use this opportunity to discover as much about your potential boss as possible, without appearing creepy, of course.Read More From Inc.

What I learned from My year of fun and how you can do it

What I learned from My year of fun and how you can do itWhat I learned from My year of fun and how you can do itIve long considered myself a pretty serious person. I study serious things. I focus on helping workplaces tackle serious issues. And for the majority of my life Ive been in pursuit of a serious kind of success power, money, influence, impact. Starting and running yur own business as much fun as it may look on Instagram is a serious endeavor. So after busting my butt for 5 years, and staying focused on growing my business, last January I set out on a different kind of mission to make 2018 my own personal Year of Fun.I wanted to conduct a little experiment on myself what would it look like to optimize for fun this year instead of focusing so much on success, money, or achievement? So each and every month I focused on cultivating a different element of fun, which perhaps Ill write more about someday. But for now, I want to share with you the top breakthroughs I experienced b ecause let me tell you, they shook me to my core. Its my hope that after hearing about my experience, youll embark on yur own Year of Fun in 2019, too And for all of you who already purchased yur2019 LifeTracker Planners,, youll notice that I made the pursuit of FUN a huge theme for the entire 2019 calendar year1. Yes, you canplanfor funBeing a fun-loving person is often associated with being spontaneous, a characteristic I fruchtwein certainly do not embody. I used to think that there are just two kinds of people carefree, fun-loving spontaneous folks, and serious people who lead more structured, productive, and focused lives. Talk about limited thinking I used to think being fun and carefree just wasnt in the cards for me.But this years experiment taught me that its not all that mutually-exclusive. You can, in fact, plan for more fun.Its simply an exercise inmindfulness. At the start of every month and week, I looked at the calendar in front of me and asked myself whats on the docke tjust for fun?I added inweekly drum lessons, regulargirls night hangouts, and rendezvous with friends from far away when my work took me traveling. Instead of lookingonlyto pack my schedule with productive time or business networking opportunities, I added in just for fun days likehiking in Sequoia National Forestfollowing a speaking engagement in nearby Fresno, CA.And yes, while it is a total privilege to have such control over my schedule and the freedom to essentiallycreatemore leikoranvers time, Id been squandering that privilege in years past. I suspect a lot of us dont recognize the power we have to pursue more fun in our day-to-day. According toProject Time Off,52% of American workers have vacation days that go unused. And I can relate Id been so fixated on making ends meet or making sure my business was growing that I used to think,I dont have the time to have fun When in reality, having more fun didnt really seem to draw from my bottom line much at all.2. More fun actually made me more productiveThis year, I took more vacation time than ever before. And my business alsoperformedbetterthan ever before. We increased gross sales by over 15% this year, which is no small feat in a modestly-sized operation like mine.On top of sheer revenue, I tackled some of the biggest projects of my career this year. I finally finishedthe bookIve been working on for the past 3 years. I launched my own independentpodcast, which I absolutely LOVE producing. And on top of what Ive tackled through Bossed Up this year, Brad and I also finished our first home renovation and bought our second house, marking the official start of our property management business.According to a growing body ofresearch, happier workers are more productive and efficient. This isexactlythe result I experienced in my year of fun, but Ill admit it took something of a leap of faith. When youre worried about quarterly earnings being low, or have a huge looming deadline on the horizon, it can be really ha rd to give yourself permission to stop, put the work down, and make time for play. But time and again, when I allowed myself to have faith that fun time wasnt happeningat the costof work time, I was able to really enjoy myself during periods of rest and renewal and experience more focused, productive work hours afterwards.3. Intentionally making memories boosted my happinessLate last year, I read the latest book from two of my favorite cognitive scientists, Dan and Chip Heath. Their book,The Power of Moments Why Certain Experiences Have Extraordinary Impact, made me realize that I hadnt previously put a lot of thought into how I celebrate traditions or mark milestones. Its actually one of the books that convinced me into having awedding (as Id been previously leaning towards eloping.) In it, the Heath brothers make the case that a little bit of thoughtfulness can go a long way in elevating any moment into a once-in-a-lifetime memory. It inspired me to consider how I wanted to make onc e-in-a-lifetime memories this year, starting with spending some quality time with my mother to celebrate her 60th birthday. On something of a whim, we went in on a steeply-discounted package vacation deal from one of my favorite angeschlossen adventure websites, TheClymb.com an 8-day guided excursion back in my mothers home country of Colombia.I knew this was going to be special because my mom never had the chance (a.k.a. never had the time or money) to return to Colombia since moving to the United States at the age of 13. Plus, it was my very first time seeing her home country myself Her 60th birthday came around on Mar. 10, so my mom and I had most of the first quarter of 2018 to excitedly look forward to our trek, which was almost as much fun as heading off on itWe flew out on her birthday, spent a few days exploring Bogot, the capital city where my mother spent most of her childhood, before heading off on a 4-day trek through the jungle to ancient ruins in La Ciudad Perdida (The Lost City) in the Sierra Nevada Mountains near Santa Marta, a coastal beach town.I totally unplugged from work throughout our stay (being on a mountainside in the middle of the jungle made that easy), and we savored our time together. Upon return, I made my mom a video showcasing our time together, so we could look back and enjoy our experience all over again It really felt like such an important bonding time for my mom and me, and now shes on a kick about making her birthday a time for a special trip every year This coming March shes coming to Colorado to visit us in our new home and go hiking with us here.4. Cheap thrills count, tooBack when I was a kid, there was a class at summer camp called Stupid, But Fun, in which you and the counselors would presumably hang out and come up with silly games and ways to entertain yourself. Being the already-quite-serious Posh Spice impersonator among my friends, I considered this offering to be utterly ridiculous and anyone who signed up for it to be fully bonkers. But now at 31, I finally get that the dumb little ways you can delight yourself count for a lotI started the year by dying my hairturquoise for no real reason other than I wanted to give it a go. I bought a moped which Im convinced is the most delightful mode of transportation on the planet, if a little impractical at times. Brad and I adopted a baby cockatiel and named him Tunafish (after our favorite Jurassic 5 rapper), having never even seen that breed of bird before.None of these moves made any goddamn sense, Ill admit it. But they put more smiles on my face than I can begin to countThroughout this year, I asked myself what my 7-year-old self would think of the life Im living these days, and made a few wacky moves to delight my inner child. Happiness scholar Gretchen Rubin says that the first step of having fun is to deeply understandwhats fun for you.. And Id argue the next step is to not edit yourself Theres this very grown-up thing we tend to do to o ur childhood quirks we rationalize them, try to make sense of them, and have to have good reason to indulge them. But bringing too much reason into this process really hampers the unbridled pursuit of fun especially stupid fun. Fun that doesnt make much sense. But let me tell you cheap thrills count just as much as the bigger-ticket items when it comes to pursuing a life you feel reflect your values.5. What youre aiming for mattersYou know that saying Aim for the moon and youll land among the stars? Its a tad cliche, but holds some truth to it the direction youre heading in will absolutely influence where you end up. In the past, I wasnt pointing myself in a direction that focused on fun. I was doggedly pursuing business success, growth and learning, maximizing my impact in my community, and ensuring a stable financial foundation for my future. These are all good things, sure, but theyre not all that fun.So without really thinking about it, I landed somewhere close to all those seri ous forms of success, without thinking about everyday delights. And you know what the consequences were? I was tired. I was feeling lonely. And I was limited in my view of what self-care looked like.Turns out, having more fun can actuallyboost your energy, foster social bonds among friends and colleagues, and help buffer againststress. And after this year, which I can confidently say has been the most fun year of my life, I cant imagine living any other kind of way. What would a Year of Fun look like for YOU in 2019?I want to challenge you to bring more FUN into your new year. Really I know were all a part of the Bossed Up community because weve got big ambition. And I promise you that your big goals arent any less important when we add on an element of FUN into our pursuits together. So starting right now, I want you to ask yourself, looking at your next week or next month whats on the docket for FUN?And if you really want to make this an intentional practice throughout the course of 2019, snag yourself one of our 2019 LifeTracker Planners now and join me for 3 upcoming master classes on sustainable goal pursuit as well as quarterly accountability calls throughout the entire year. Job interview question and answer Why should we hire you

Job interview question and answer Why should we hire you Job interview question and answer Why should we hire you?Posted October 13, 2011, by Elissa Collier This is where you need to stand out from the crowd. There may be several other candidates with similar qualifications and work histories going for the same job as you you need to give the interviewer a reason to hire you over others. The employer will want to know what you can bring to the company and how you can improve it. First and foremost, make sure you link your talents and skills to the requirements of the position and the company demonstrating how you are a perfect fit for their corporate culture and you meet all the criteria specified in the job description. Second, highlight any extra skills you have to make you stand out from all the other people who also meet the criteria. Give examples of career achievements and explain how the skills and experience you have will be beneficial in the new job. Set yourself apart f rom the pack by showing them how you can transfer these skills across to the company you are applying for, and dont be afraid to use an example from your personal life if its relevant. For example, you might be applying for an administration job but you helped out with newsletters and fliers for your basketball team, which has given you some extra skills with marketing. The final clincher will be whether or notlage they like you are you someone they would want as part of their team? Be confident, but dont sound too cocky they dont want someone who is full of themselves and dont bag the other candidates this indicates that you wouldnt be a nice person to work with. The key is to confidently demonstrate that you are the best person for the job, but dont forget to smile and be personable. 9 Questions to Ask Before You Accept a Job Offer

9 Questions to Ask Before You Accept a Job Offer9 Questions to Ask Before You Accept a Job OfferIs the job offer right for you? Or will it merely distract you from searching for the perfect fit?Considering the stresses of the job search, its not surprising that job binnenseekers are often tempted to jump at the first offer they receive. But before you decide to commit yourself to a job that will occupy most of your waking hours, invest a little quiet thought in the opportunity and its potential to affect your life.Consider unterstellung nine questions before you end your job search and accept any work, whether its temporary, full or part time.1.Will this job enhance or expand your focus on your career? Is this just to pay the bills? elend a problem. We all have to make money. But level with yourself up front. Ideally you can find something redeeming and useful in the work, even if its only to buy you some freedom to keep your dream-job search on track.2. If its not a dream job, will it interfere with your continuing efforts to find one?Until youve landed a job you love, I would suggest that you make finding it your second job. That might mean taking an hour every evening and a few more over weekends to pursue education, contacts and experience in your field of interest. If you accept the job thats on the table, will you have the discipline to carve out the time to keep that second job going? Dont lock a door with no way out.3. Will you enjoy what youre doing?Even if youve admitted to yourself that this job is simply for cash, can you find a way to enjoy it? It may require a little imagination, but the energy you invest can reap unexpected benefits if only for your state of mind.4. Do you have the skills and aptitude to succeed? The old adage fake it until you make it works sometimes, but you dont want to give yourself yet another self-esteem blow by getting in way over your head and setting yourself up for failure. Find a mentor either within or outside the organ ization, join professional or trade associations in the field, and do tons of research.5. Are there clear, attainable benchmarks for success? You must know what success looks like. Before you take the job, verify that it comes with achievable metrics for success. If there are no outlined standards of accomplishment, partner with your employer to create them.6. Can you make a real contribution?Do you see opportunities to exceed those basic benchmarks? If you see a path that allows you to excel, you stand a much better chance of proving your value for the long term.7. Have you thoroughly investigated the opportunity and company?Use the wisdom of your professional network as well as your own research to inform your decision. How stable is the company/position? You dont want to sideline your job search for a position thats transitory. Do your industry research, and dont be afraid to ask tough questions about the companys recent performance and the circumstances that created the opening yo ure being asked to fill. Brewery Jobs in the Booming Beer Industry

Brewery Jobs in the Booming Beer Industry Brewery Jobs in the Booming Beer Industry Brewery Jobs in the Booming Beer Industry Cheers to beers, and the jobs that come with them. St. Patrick's Day is just around the corner and that makes everyone think of leprechauns, all things green and beer. Yes, sometimes even the beer itself is green. If you're a fan of the suds, you've probably dreamed of a brewery job. Of course, the first thing you probably think of is growing a big, shaggy beard (if you're a guy) and becoming the head brewer. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's not the only way to get into this awesome industry. Here are eight cool brewery jobs that are out there for beer lovers who want to join the party. 1. Tour Guide. What could be better than talking to people about beer all day, every day? A beer tour guide could mean a couple of things, actually. Most breweries offer in-house tours where visitors can learn about the brewery's history and get an up-close-and-personal look at the operation. As a tour guide in a brewery, you'd be responsible for learning the brewery's history and methods for brewing and take the eager visitors on the educational tour. Frequently, people in brewery job can also serve in other areas of the brewery such as tap room bartenders/servers or merchandise clerks. What's better than giving tours of a brewery? How about leading tours to multiple breweries? With the boom of the craft brewing industry, certain cities have many craft breweries within minutes of each other. Asheville, North Carolina is a city with less than 90,000 residents, yet it boasts over 30 local breweries. Visitors can choose from a number of different beer tour options to check out a bunch of them while not having to get behind the wheel of a vehicle. 2. Beer Journalist. People make a living writing about beer? Yes. How cool is that? Publications like All About Beer Magazine and Beer Advocate need people to write the great stuff that fills their pages. For this beer job, you may have to sample many styles of beer and possible travel to big beer events and crazy cool beer destinations. It also helps if you have a knack for using the written word to craft fun-to-read articles. 3. Brand Ambassador. For many companies, these beer jobs or brewery jobs are a fancy name for sales. But, you do get to do more than just knock on doors. Beer tasting events and other fun things might require your presence. Your job? Being an ambassador for your brand. Teach people about what your brand does differently and what makes it awesome. Give away free swag. Like any sales position, there is a lot of competition and it's far from stress-free, but there are a lot of cool perks. Plus, instead of saying, I sell insurance, you can say, I'm a brand ambassador for the coolest brewing company around. Very nice. 4. Graphic Designer. Have you seen the artwork on craft beer labels lately? The artwork behind a brewery's image is taken very seriously these days and that means they're not afraid to hire professionals with a good eye to create it for them. This might be a brewery job that's hard to get, but if you have an awesome portfolio and you can create awesome looking labels, packaging and websites, you might be in luck. Just check out the fun stuff graphic artist Conrad Garner creates for Coppertail Brewing. How fun is that? 5. Homebrew Store Owner. It's not just the commercial breweries that are making great beers these days. Homebrewing has come a long way in recent years. Homebrewing clubs and competitions are everywhere and these people are fanatical about making great beer. If you have an entrepreneurial spirit and love beer, the homebrew game could be the way to go. You'd have your own store that helps provide the hops, grains and equipment these garage maestros need to brew their heavenly creations. You'll get to talk beer all day long and probably get a lot of free samples along the way. Score! 6. Draft Beer Technician. Draft beer is a lot more finicky than many people realize. It needs to be stored at the right temperatures and be served properly. Perhaps the most important part of the beer's journey from creation to your mouth is from the keg to the glass. If a tavern doesn't properly maintain those beer lines and keep everything sanitary, it can ruin a good brew faster than that guy with the giant foam finger in front of you can ruin your night out at the game. A draft beer technician is the guru who helps maintain those lines and other equipment, usually hired by a beer distributor. Why would they pay out good money for someone to do that and not just make the bar be responsible? Because if their beer comes out stinky or off-flavored, customers don't blame the bar, they blame the beer. A good draft beer technician is a vital part of quality control. A perfect beer job for that perfectionist with a high technical aptitude. 7. Brewery Ingredient Sales. Just like a great chef needs good ingredients to create those amazing dishes, breweries need the raw materials to create their magic as well. These days, it goes far beyond hops, malted barley and yeast. Breweries are experimenting with everything from oak chips to herbs to fruit peels. A Brewery Ingredient Sales rep is just what it sounds like. This brewery job means you'd make your living going to breweries and convincing them to utilize your products to make their beer. You'd also get to push new and innovative ingredients, which can be fun and build a relationship with all your favorite breweries. Perks galore. 8. Social Media Specialist. The beer industry hasn't resisted social media, it has fully embraced it as a great way to reach their customers. That means they hire social media specialists to create their Tweets, Facebook posts, Youtube videos and Instagram pics. With social media, you do more than just advertise, you interact with your brewery's fans and build relationships. For those with a savvy marketing mind and social media skills, it's like playing online everyday while boosting your favorite beer. How many Likes is that worth? So while you're out enjoying yourself this St. Patrick's Day, go ahead and have brew. Then, pause and think about how that beer got into your hand. Someone grew those ingredients. A sales rep sold them to a brewery where they were made into beer. Another sales person sold the beer to the bar you're standing in that, luckily for you, has perfectly maintained beer lines. Wouldn't it be cool to be a part of that? Check out one of the industry's special job sites and join the party with brewery jobs or beer jobs. No beard required.
